Medical Assistants provide essential medical administrative support to the RAF. You’ll manage medical documentation, pull together teams for medical emergencies and provide some basic nursing care. You could work on the reception desk in a medical centre, booking appointments and keeping records up to date. It could also be your role to receive and store medical supplies in the dispensary. Medical Assistants have a clinical role as well. You’ll play a key part in the medical monitoring of aircrew by performing electrocardiograms. There are also opportunities to help care for patients being transferred from overseas back to the UK by air. You will also be trained in pre hospital emergency care skills and provide cover in the event of a road or air emergency, and for non-serious routine injuries. Like most people in the RAF, you’ll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour. Most of your tours will be in a medical centre on an RAF base in the UK, but there are also opportunities to work in hospital administration. Within your first few years, you’ll probably be detached overseas to carry out your role in tented accommodation. Detachments can last anything from a few days to a few months. On operations and exercises, Medical Assistants have an important clinical role and take on a lot of responsibility.
