Job application advice
Where to start
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the number of jobs advertised, so make sure to focus your search. Think realistically about the kind of jobs you’ll be comfortable applying for and don’t waste time with jobs you know you’re unlikely to accept. If you’ve any doubts at this early stage, perhaps it isn’t the job for you. The more forms you have to complete, the less time you will have to search for new jobs and produce fantastic applications.
Application forms
If you are asked to complete an electronic job application form online you may be able to copy sections from your CV, but make sure to answer the questions in full.
If you are filling in a form by hand then always do a trial run first – plan out what you want to write and how much space it is going to fill.
Make sure to focus on the sections where you are able to sell yourself and keep a copy of the form in case you’re asked about it in the interview. It won’t look good if you’ve forgotten what you’ve written.
The cover letter
Your covering letter is a perfect opportunity to focus your own thoughts on the job and to boost your CV.
Start by introducing yourself and explaining which job you are applying for. Describe your duties and responsibilities in your current job and also your successes so far.
You should end the covering letter by explaining why you have chosen to apply for this job - and by inviting the reader to take a closer look at your CV. You can point them towards any highlights or important points.
Your CV
You should always be looking to update and improve your CV. There are obvious times to do this - for example if you complete a qualification or get a promotion in your current job, but you should always be thinking about new skills, experience or responsibilities that can be added to improve your CV. Think hard about skills that can be transferred from one job to another – leadership, organisation, problem-solving, and communication are needed by all employers.
Something else to think about
There’s nothing to stop you sending out letters to companies that haven’t advertised jobs. Explain a bit about yourself, your skills and your experience, and ask to be considered for any vacancies that might become available in future. It could give you a handy head start, so why not visit our recruiter A - Z for company contact details and get yourself a great job.
